Daniel Kerr's shocking conviction leaves Australian football star absent from sister's World Cup clash

Brother to Australia international Sam Kerr, Daniel, was conspicuously absent from the sidelines during the highly anticipated FIFA Women's World Cup semi-final clash between England and Australia on Wednesday.

Daniel Kerr, a former Australian Football League (AFL) star who amassed an impressive 220 games and secured a premiership with the West Coast Eagles, has been facing legal troubles that prevented his attendance at his sister's significant match.

According to Daily Mail,  Kerr, now 40 years old, found himself in hot water after being charged with criminal damage by fire, leading to a conviction by the Perth District Court in May 2023.

The troubling incident occurred on February 17, 2021, when Daniel Kerr reportedly drove to the family home in Kardinya and set fire to the back rooms.

Kerr's defense attorney, Kate Turtley-Chappel, informed the court that her client had been diagnosed with schizophrenia while in custody, shedding light on his mental state at the time of the incident.

The aftermath of the event resulted in nearly $250,000 worth of damage to the property. Authorities arrested Kerr at his car wash business roughly an hour later.

Beyond his legal troubles, he has struggled with alcohol and drug issues since his retirement in 2013.

Kerr's relationship with his younger sister, Sam Kerr, has been marked by its ups and downs.

The talented soccer superstar, a leading name in women's football and the captain of the Matildas, has grappled with the impact of her brother's challenges on their family dynamics.

Their bond suffered a two-year silence after the ordeal, with Sam Kerr sharing in 2020 that, "I didn't speak to him for two years."

Despite this estrangement, Sam Kerr acknowledged the importance of their relationship, stating, "All our family's close but me and Daniel are super-close ... he always says, 'that's the thing that brought me back onto the road, that everyone spoke to me except you.'"

The absence of communication weighed heavily on Sam Kerr, who found it challenging to watch her parents cope with the stress her brother's actions imposed on the family. She revealed, "I had to watch mum and dad be stressed out about their 30-year-old son, which isn't normal and it affected me. I don't let things bother me but seeing my parents have to deal with it, that was probably the hardest thing."

In a poignant turn of events, Daniel Kerr had previously attributed his sister's "tough love" as a catalyst for his journey toward rehabilitation.

He admitted that her approach acted as a wakeup call, leading him to "behave again, to get my family back." This positive trajectory was tragically interrupted by the February 2021 incident that landed him in legal trouble.

The semi-final match witnessed England taking the lead through Ella Toone's brilliant strike, only to be matched by Sam Kerr's awe-inspiring goal, widely regarded as one of the tournament's best, which equalized the score during the second half.

The game eventually saw England rallying to secure a historic victory, setting up their first-ever Women's World Cup final appearance with a 3-1 win, thanks to goals from Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo.
