KCee: Nigerian singer opens up on failed football career, likens himself to Premier League legend

Appearing as a guest on the Premier League weekend show, KCee recently shared insights into his football journey before music took center stage.

Nigerian singer Kingsley Chinweike Okonkwo, better known as KCee, renowned for hits like "Limpopo" and "Ojapiano," recently delved into his past as a footballer before transitioning to a successful career in the music industry.

As part of the Hip-Hop group "KC Presh," KCee’s journey in the entertainment world took an unexpected turn having initually pursued a career in football.

Having reflected on his longevity in the Nigerian music industry, KCee reminisced about his football career, having played for PUMA and Julius Berger, a local team in Nigeria.

The Nigerian singer played as a striker while growing up.

However, his dual passion for music soon took precedence over his sporting ambitions.

"When I was playing soccer, I was doing music by the side," the Five Star Music superstar said on his appearance as a co-host on the Premier League’s “Welcome to the Weekend” show.

"So I was hoping to get out there. And music came in first, I won a talent hunt and they gave me about four million naira. So I had to stop football a little bit and focus more on the music. That was how I left football.”

In an intriguing revelation, Kcee also compared his playing style to that of Premier League icon Didier Drogba when asked to liken his game to a striker in English football.

Describing Drogba's attributes as "energy and grace" coupled with an unwavering determination, Kcee saw a reflection of his own approach to his music career.

"Drogba has this energy and grace…he’s a fighter, he never takes no for an answer. That’s who I am and that’s why I’m still sustaining my career till now," he remarked.

Despite bidding farewell to his football aspirations, KCee’s love for the sport remains unwavering, particularly for his beloved Chelsea Football Club.

Kcee stood firm in his support for the Blues, boldly admitting he is a “big time” fan of the West London club.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men recorded an impressive 3-2 victory against Newcastle in the Premier League on Monday night, March 11, which also co-incided with the birthday of Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba.
