The 42-year-old started his coaching journey in Africa in 2012 with Nigeria's Kaduna United. However, his tenure there lasted only four months. Throughout his career, he has had short spells at different clubs, and KCCA is now his ninth club in seven years. In January 2023, he was unveiled as the head coach of Botswana's Township Rollers on a two-year contract.

Sergio has worked with youth teams in the past. At Hearts of Oak, he was initially responsible for scouting and recruiting talents for the club in 2016. Within a week, he was promoted to the role of coaching the senior team. However, due to alleged non-performance, he was later demoted to the youth team. During his reign, the club's junior team was relegated from the country's third-tier to the fourth-tier league.

Backroom Battles

During his time at Hearts of Oak, Sergio faced challenges within his backroom staff. He blamed his failures on alleged backstabbing by his own coaching staff, who he claimed took advantage of the language barrier to issue different instructions to the players during matches.

Draw Master

In 2023, while coaching Township Rollers in Botswana, Sergio gained the nickname "the draw master" due to his team's performance. In his first six matches, he managed to secure only 8 points with five draws and one win.

Tiki-taka Philosophy

During his tenure at Santa Rita De Cassia, a club in the Angolan Premier League, Sergio received praise for adopting the renowned Tiki-taka philosophy, the possession-based playing style that aligns well with KCCA FC's focus on youth team development and their aspirations in the CAF Confederations Cup and domestic competitions.
