Neymar has been given an emotional lift from his son, David Lucca, after the Brazilian superstar was reduced to tears following Santos’ crushing 6-0 home defeat to Vasco da Gama.

The heavy loss is the worst of Neymar’s career and Santos’ biggest-ever home defeat in the Brasileirão.

After the final whistle, Neymar admitted he felt "ashamed" and called the performance "a disgrace to play that kind of game wearing a Santos jersey."

The result also deepened Santos’ relegation fears and led to the immediate dismissal of head coach Cleber Xavier.

What Neymar’s son said

Amid the turmoil, Neymar took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message he received from his son.

David Lucca’s words read, “Good evening, Dad. I know today has been a difficult day for you and for us, but I wanted you to know that in these difficult moments, and when no one is by your side, know that I will always be there for you.

“You are more than a great father, you are an idol, you are my inspiration, and even when you cry, I want you to know that I love you very much. Always keep that in mind. (…) Now, I want you to hold your head high and reach out to them as you always have and will. You are incredible. I love you with all my heart."

The Brazil international responded with equal tenderness, replying, “I love you, my little one. Dad will get back on his feet."

Neymar will now miss Santos’ clash against Bahia on Sunday after picking up a one-match suspension following his booking against Vasco.
