AFCON 2023: Peseiro admits Super Eagles were second best in the final

The final, a showcase of grit, skill, and unexpected turns, ended in favour of the host nation, completing what has been a fairy-tale journey for the Elephants from the brink of group stage elimination to continental glory.

The match was nothing short of a cinematic climax, with Ivory Coast rewriting their script after dismissing their manager Jean-Louis Gasset mid-tournament and appointing Emerse Fae as his replacement. 

The change sparked an incredible turnaround, culminating in former West Ham striker Sebastian Haller netting the decisive goal just minutes before the final whistle, following Franck Kessie's equalizer that cancelled out William Troost-Ekong's opener for Nigeria.

Despite the loss, Nigeria's journey to the final was marked by commendable defensive performances, a testament to the team's quality and resilience throughout the tournament. 

Nigeria's manager, Jose Peseiro, acknowledged Ivory Coast's superiority on the night, expressing pride in his team's achievements and the collective effort that brought them so close to glory as reported by Allnigeriasoccer. 

"I agree with you our team had a fantastic tournament but today Côte d'Ivoire was better, had a very good game. Our team didn't show our level, it's the truth. No individual quality and collective performance like we did before," Peseiro remarked, encapsulating the bittersweet end to Nigeria's campaign.

William Troost-Ekong, Nigeria's captain, emerged from the tournament with individual honours, earning the Best Player award and setting a record as the top-scoring defender in AFCON history. 

His contributions, along with the team's overall performance, are sources of pride for the Nigerian football community, despite the final's outcome.
