Ugandan midfielder Allan Okello was left to observe from the sidelines as Young Africans SC maintained their grip at the top of the league table following a hard-fought 0-0 draw against fierce rivals Simba SC on Sunday evening.
Played under the floodlights at the New Amaan Complex, the latest edition of the Kariakoo Derby lived up to its billing in intensity, even if it lacked goals. For Okello, who recently joined Yanga, it was a first taste of one of Africa’s most iconic rivalries as he awaits his opportunity to make an impact in the high-stakes fixture.
Cagey Start Under the Lights
Both sides approached the contest cautiously, with neither willing to overcommit in the early exchanges. The opening half was largely tactical, marked by tight defending and limited clear-cut chances.
Simba looked slightly more adventurous before the break. Jospin Loemba forced Yanga goalkeeper Djigui Diarra into a sharp fingertip save after being picked out by Nickson Kibabage. At the other end, Yanga’s Mohamed Damaro tried his luck from distance, but his effort sailed off target.
Second-Half Drama but No Breakthrough
The tempo increased after the restart as both teams searched for a decisive moment. Yanga’s Prince Dube came close to breaking the deadlock, only to see his powerful strike denied by Simba custodian Djibrilla Kassali.
The biggest flashpoint arrived in the 70th minute when Seleman Mwalimu found the back of the net, sparking wild celebrations among Simba supporters. However, the assistant referee’s flag cut the joy short, ruling the effort offside and preserving the stalemate.
The draw ensures Yanga remain top of the table with 29 points from 11 matches, continuing their dominance in recent derby meetings, with Simba still searching for a win in the fixture since August 2023. Simba stay third on 24 points, while Pamba Jiji sit second with 28 points, having played more games.
For Allan Okello, the evening may not have provided minutes on the pitch, but it offered a close-up view of the intensity and expectations surrounding the Kariakoo Derby.
