Following his breakout season under Erik Ten Hag, Mainoo has found it difficult to get minutes at Man United since the arrival of Amorim.

The midfielder had requested to leave the Red Devils on loan this summer, but his request was denied by the club and they instructed him to fight for his shirt.

The England international hadn't started any of the first three Premier League matches and sought playing time away from Old Trafford, but Manchester United ultimately rejected the loan proposal.

"Like many players, he wants to play more. I didn't have a conversation with him before the transfer window closed, but I did this week. I didn't want Kobbie to think I was only talking to him to keep him here," the manager stated, as reported by Abola.

Amorim further emphasised his belief in the midfielder's potential but made it clear he expects more: "Some think he's already there, but I believe he can improve a lot. Maybe it's not fair, but I'm helping him."

These comments come amidst reports of discontent within the club's hierarchy. The board was reportedly displeased with Amorim's public assertion that Mainoo would compete for a starting spot with Bruno Fernandes, a situation that created tension at the end of the transfer window. Jason Wilcox, the club's technical director, is understood to have been crucial in convincing the player to stay.

When questioned about the midfielder's reaction, Amorim admitted that Mainoo is uncomfortable with the competition for a starting role, but he drew a parallel to Vitinha, who faced difficulties at Wolverhampton before establishing himself: "Today he could be the best midfielder in the world. You never know."

The coach also highlighted that his playing style differs significantly from the previous approach at Old Trafford, demanding more responsibility from all midfielders. "If he starts more often, it might be difficult to take him out of the team.

"But I have to follow what I feel in the moment," he concluded, recalling that Mainoo has already started a European Championship final but assuring that he will always demand more from him in the present.
