Sampdoria have announced the dismissal of their coach Andrea Pirlo, who was in charge of the club for just a year.

The Serie B club's decision comes following a disappointing start to the 2024-2025 season, with one draw and two losses placing them second-from-bottom in the table.

Pirlo, a renowned Italian footballer who won the 2006 FIFA World Cup with Italy, had a brief managerial stint at Juventus between 2020 and 2021.

He then took charge of Turkish club Fatih Karagümrük before joining Sampdoria in June 2023. Despite his illustrious playing career, Pirlo has struggled to replicate his success as a manager.

Sampdoria finished seventh in Serie B last season and were eliminated from the promotion playoffs, failing to secure a return to Serie A.

The club's decision to sack Pirlo comes as a surprise to many, given his reputation as a tactical mastermind. However, the pressure to achieve immediate results in Serie B proved too much for the former Italy international.

Sampdoria now have a huge task of finding a suitable replacement for Pirlo as they continue their quest to return to Italy's top flight.
