Joshua, who last fought in September 2024, suffered a disappointing defeat to Daniel Dubois in an IBF world title clash at Wembley Stadium.
The British-Nigerian boxer has since been sidelined by injury but is now said to be exploring potential venues for his comeback fight, with Nigeria and Ghana both under consideration.
Talks are underway to bring AJ home.
Promoter Dr Ezekiel Adamu, who recently staged a major boxing event in Lagos in collaboration with former world champion Amir Khan, revealed that preliminary discussions are ongoing to stage a headline bout for Joshua in Lagos.
“It was an amazing success. A new opening for boxing in Africa. The reception has been great, from the locals, the boxing world, and the government as well,” Adamu told Sky Sports News.
He added that plans are in motion for Joshua’s return to take place in the first quarter of 2026 (Q1).
He continued, “We’ve had a preliminary conversation, and we’ll keep going. We all know AJ has always said he wants to fight in Africa before the end of his career, and we believe Nigeria is the best story.”
Why Nigeria makes sense
Nigeria, with a population exceeding 250 million, represents a massive potential market for boxing. Dr Adamu emphasised the country’s growing interest in the sport and its suitability as a host nation.
He said, “Nigeria is the economic capital of Africa. We are poised to make this happen and show the world that Africa can host big boxing nights.”
Meanwhile, Congolese heavyweight Martin Bakole has already volunteered to face Joshua should the fight materialise.
Bakole, a former sparring partner of AJ’s, is seeking to rebuild his career after losing to Joseph Parker and drawing with Efe Ajagba.
If confirmed, the event would mark Joshua’s first professional fight on African soil, fulfilling a long-held dream to compete on the continent where his parents were born.
