Hansi Flick's men flew out of the blocks looking to impose themselves on proceedings early on.
They were rewarded with an opener after just seven minutes, when Gavi drove a low shot into the bottom corner from Ferran Torres’ first-time through ball.
Barca's lead lasted for just 10 minutes before Natan powered a header home from Giovani Lo Celso’s corner to restore parity.
Barca, shocked by the goal, piled on more pressure, with Torres diverting a gilt-edged chance just wide, before Adrián made a strong stop to deny Lamine Yamal as Betis dug deep to survive an attacking onslaught.
The second half was more of the same, but Betis held firm to secure a crucial point.
