Barcelona handed boost as UEFA lifts Flick’s touchline ban ahead of Newcastle clash
FC Barcelona have been handed a timely boost ahead of their UEFA Champions League opener against Newcastle United next week, with manager Hansi Flick and his assistant Marcus Sorg cleared to take their places on the bench.
According to Mundo Deportivo, UEFA has partially upheld Barcelona’s appeal against the suspensions imposed on the two coaches following last season’s controversial semi-final exit to Inter Milan. Both Flick and Sorg had originally been handed one-match bans for breaching the competition’s code of conduct and general principles.
The successful appeal means Flick will be allowed to lead his side from the dugout at St. James’ Park on Thursday, where Barcelona open their Champions League campaign against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle.
However, UEFA has placed both coaches under a one-year probation period. If either is found guilty of repeating similar offences, they risk renewed sanctions in addition to fresh penalties.
Barcelona will also cover the costs of the appeal process, though this is seen as a minor issue compared to the positive outcome.
Meanwhile, Flick will have to navigate the opener without Gavi and Alejandro Balde, both sidelined through injury.
Newcastle are also expected to be without new signings Yoanne Wissa and Jacob Ramsey.
