Bouyant Mawejje ready to give 100% in first major coaching role

Former Uganda Cranes midfielder Tonny Mawejje is now an assistant coach at Women's football side Kampala Queens and has expressed his readiness to perform to the best of his abilities in his new role.

Mawejje, named assistant coach on Monday, says he is looking forward to the challenge and can't wait to help the team achieve its targets in the coming campaign.

"I am happy to be part of the Kampala Queens group and the technical team,” Mawejje told Kampala Queens media.

“I am here to add something and be part of the victory in the next campaign. I am looking forward to working with everyone on the team and technical team."

Mawejje, a CAF C holder, a license he attained in May 2023, will, alongside a head coach yet to be named, be tasked with guiding the current Women's Super League champions to the CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers title.

Winning the qualifiers which are set to be hosted on home soil will grant them a CAF Champions League ticket for the first time, becoming the first Ugandan Women's side and second in East Africa after Tanzania's Simba Queens.

The Kabojja-based side has already started bolstering its squad with the acquisitions of Hadijah Nandago and Smalie Nakacwa, who both joined on loan from Kawempe Muslim Ladies FC.

The loan acquisition of Shakirah Nyinagahirwa, the MVP and top scorer of the Women's Super League last season, was also aimed at strengthening the squad.

In 2022, She Corporate reached the Zonal qualifiers final but lost to Simba Queens 1-0; Lady Doves is the other Ugandan Women's club that has played at the qualifiers before.

FUFA in April this year confirmed that Uganda would host the qualifiers between June and August at a venue set to be confirmed.

Morocco's AS FAR Rabat are the competition's defending champions after they beat Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies FC 4-0 in the 2022 final.
