Former Barcelona and Sevilla star Ivan Rakitic has tipped Manchester United as slight favourites to win over Tottenham in a gripping Europa League final, labelling the clash a 'last chance' for the two Premier League sides desperate to redeem underwhelming domestic campaigns.

In an interview with Pulse Sports Nigeria, facilitated by LALIGA ahead of the final at Bilbao’s iconic San Mamés Stadium, Rakitic stated the match’s critical importance for both clubs, each struggling with inconsistent performances in the 2024-25 Premier League season.

Manchester United, under Ruben Amorim, have struggled to find consistency, sitting 16th in the Premier League with 10 wins from 37 matches, plagued by defensive lapses and a lack of clinical finishing despite Bruno Fernandes’ leadership.

Tottenham, managed by Ange Postecoglou, have not fared any better as they sit behind the Red Devils in 17th, with injuries to key players and erratic form leading to 21 losses, leaving fans frustrated after early-season promise.

Both teams, separated by just a point, view the Europa League as a chance to salvage their seasons and secure silverware.

“It’s like the Champions League final, perhaps more complicated because it’s two teams that know each other very well and, in theory, have seasons to forget,” Rakitic, who played against the Red Devils in the competition, said.

Ivan Rakitic believes Man United are favourites but the UEL final will be a physical battle.

“It’s the last chance for both teams. For me, Manchester United is a slight favourite, and this would help everything that’s happening around the club. It’s also a very important game for Tottenham.”

He predicted a “physical, strong” encounter, with both sides cautious to avoid errors in a match that could define their campaigns.

“The teams won’t want to make mistakes because the season depends on this game,” he added.

Rakitic, a fan of San Mamés’ electrifying atmosphere, called it “one of the best stadiums in Europe” and “crazy,” setting the stage for a tense battle.

United, aiming for their first European trophy since 2017, rely on Fernandes’ creativity, while Spurs, chasing their first major title since 2008, bank on their attacking flair.

Rakitic’s nod to United’s slight edge shows their recent history, but Tottenham’s hunger makes this final a coin toss.
