CHAN 2024: Uganda's Coach Outlines Game Plan to Conquer South Africa After Niger Win
Uganda reignited their CHAN 2024 campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory against Niger at a packed Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala on Monday night.
While the pre-game statistics favoured Niger, Uganda's tactical discipline and Allan Okello's brilliance proved decisive.
Okello orchestrated the attack and opened the scoring in the 25th minute. He then turned provider, setting up Uganda's second goal just 11 minutes into the second half. Despite Niger dominating possession and passing accuracy, Uganda's clinical finishing made the difference.
CHAN 2024: Uganda’s Tactical Shift Pays Off
This victory followed a disappointing 3-0 opening loss for Uganda. Head coach Morley Byekwaso attributed the turnaround to improved defensive organisation and mental fortitude.
“We are thrilled with this win, especially after our initial setback. We maintained our focus, strengthened our defence, motivated our captains, and gave our playmakers freedom,” Morley Byekwaso said as per CAF Online.
“Solid defending is crucial in tournaments, and when you capitalise on your chances, you get results.”
Morley Byekwaso’s tactics effectively neutralised Niger's attack and provided space for his creative players, particularly Okello, whose movement and precision constantly threatened the Nigerien defence.
CHAN 2024: Eyes on South Africa
With their next match against South Africa, Morley Byekwaso is already strategising.
“We know they are dangerous in the final third. We must be smart and cautious, as they are aware of our strengths and weaknesses. After our first defeat, we understand the sting of losing, and we're determined to avoid that feeling again,” Morley Byekwaso said.
This upcoming match could determine Uganda's fate in the tournament, with qualification now a realistic possibility.
CHAN 2024: Niger’s Frustration Grows
For Niger, the loss extended their goalless streak to two matches. Head coach Harouna Doula Gabde offered a frank assessment.
“In both games, our attack hasn't posed a serious threat. Their first goal made things easier for them. I want to review the footage to confirm the penalty decision. We struggled to cope with the physicality of their defence.”
Despite the setback, Gabde remained defiant.
“We need to regroup for our remaining matches against South Africa and Algeria. We must improve our finishing while maintaining our defensive solidity. We didn't lack physical presence, but we lacked efficiency in the final third.”
Qualification Race Heats Up
Uganda's win puts them in a strong position to contend for a knockout stage berth. However, Niger faces a much tougher challenge, and unless their attack finds its rhythm soon, their CHAN 2024 journey may be cut short.
