Day 1 at the Tokyo 2025 World Championships ended in mixed outings with Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Kanyinsola Ajayi, and Israel Okon starring as Nigeria's top performers.

In the men's Shot Put final, Enekwechi on his last attempt, threw a respectable mark of 21.52m to finish fifth, thus strengthening his position in the top 5 of the world's best throwers.

It was the same position he had at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, showing his consistency that it's only a matter of time to finally win a medal at a major championship.

Meanwhile, in the men's 100m, youngsters and NCAA standouts Ajayi and Okon were the star performers for Nigeria, as they both booked their spots in the semifinals.

Ajayi set things rolling, clocking a massive personal best of 9.88s to finish second in his heat, while Okon blazed to victory in his heat in an impressive 10.04s.

Chukwuma, Brume, and Ochonogor end Tokyo 2025 campaign in respective events

Rosemary Chukwuma failed to put up the same spirited performance in the women's 100m category, having finished fifth in her heat and didn't make the semifinal.

While in the women's long jump, veteran Ese Brume didn't make it out of her qualifying round after recording a mark of 6.46m to finish tenth. Likewise, rising star Prestina Ochonogor leaped an unimpressive 6.05m in her qualifying round to sixteenth.

In the morning session, Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons and Obiageri Amaechi also failed to make the final in the women's Discus throw.
