Okonkwo who went to TCU finally gets to make her debut in the WNBA.
She spearheaded Nigeria's D’Tigress to win the 2025 AfroBasket and was named MVP of the tournament, averaging 14 points and six rebounds per game.
The Wings announced the arrival of Okonkwo on their official social media platforms.
A message to welcome the Nigerian star said, "Welcome, Amy
"The Dallas Wings have signed forward Amy Okonkwo to a seven-day hardship contract.
"The two-time FIBA AfroBasket MVP (2023, 2025) will be available for Friday’s game against the Seattle Storm."
Okonkwo who is recognized as one of Africa’s top basketball talents has played in several European leagues since leaving the NCAA.
She has experience in Israel, Mexico and recently from playing in the French league with Saint-Amand and Landerneau Bretagne Basket.
The Wings were able to make space for Okonkwo due to roster challenges and injuries that have plagued the team this season.
A hardship is afforded to WNBA teams that have unforeseen circumstances, such as injuries or illnesses to players on their team.
The hardship contract lasts for exactly seven days and cannot extend beyond the regular season, as the player is paid the minimum base salary prorated over that period.
On the Dallas Wings, Okonkwo will team up with number one overall pick Paige Bueckers who recently scores a rookie record of 44 points in her last outing.
She will also join another player of Nigerian descent, Arike Ogunbowale on the Wings as the tackle their remaining fixtures to end the WNBA season.
