Mohamed Salah was the saviour as Egypt escaped humiliation against Mozambique at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.
The Pharaohs salvaged a point following a 2-2 draw against the Mambas, with the Liverpool legend scoring a late penalty on Sunday evening.
Salah’s Egypt and Mozambique
The Liverpool legend and his fellow Pharaohs came into the game as favourites and started on the front foot when they took an early.
Mostafa Mohamed latched on to a pass from Mo Salah to put Egypt in front with just two minutes played.
However, things quickly turned around in the second half as Mozambique scored two quick goals in three minutes to lead 2-1.
Witi netted the all-important equaliser in the 55th minute before Clesio Bauque scored three minutes later to hand the Mambas a dream lead.
With time running out and Mozambique looking likely to register the biggest shock of the AFCON2023 yet, the record champions were handed a lifeline.
Mostafa was again involved as he was hacked down in the Mozambique box in added time, with Salah stepping up to calmly convert to save Egypt’s blushes.
A fortunate narrow escape for Egypt and Salah, who is hungry for his first-ever AFCON title with his nation.
