Explained: Here is why Mbappé didn't let Modric take the penalty to mark his farewell
When Real Madrid were awarded a penalty in the first half of their match against Real Sociedad, Luka Modric was expected to step up to the spot.
However, Kylian Mbappé took the penalty instead. His initial shot was saved, but the French forward netted the rebound to put Real 1-0 ahead. Real Madrid went on to win 2-0.
As this was Modric's final game at the Bernabéu for Real Madrid, fans felt he should have been given the opportunity to score in his farewell appearance.
Mbappe's penalty
According to Sportal.bg, Mbappé has his own reasons for needing to find the back of the net. The Frenchman is in contention for the European Golden Shoe.
His two goals in the match took his tally to 31, moving him ahead of Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyökeres in the rankings. Now, only Liverpool's Mohamed Salah stands between Mbappé and the award.
The Golden Shoe awards points for each goal scored, weighted by the league's ranking. While Gyökeres has scored 39 goals, the Portuguese league has a lower weighting (1.5) compared to La Liga and the Premier League (both 2.0).
This means the Swede's goals total 58.5 points. Unfortunately for Gyökeres, the Portuguese season has concluded, and he can no longer add to his tally.
Meanwhile, Mbappé's 31 goals, multiplied by two, give him a total of 62 points as he currently leads the Golden Boot race.
Salah, who has one game remaining for Liverpool against Crystal Palace on Sunday, currently sits on 56 points from 28 goals. This means the Premier League Player of the Season needs at least a hat-trick to draw level with Mbappé.
