Ferdinand Omanyala remains vague on his targets this season

Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala has disclosed that he does not want to get ahead of himself as he looks to have a great 2024 season.

The Commonwealth Games champion noted that he will not be giving his fans a lot of expectations like last year. Last season, Omanyala was bubbling with excitement going into the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, and had promised to win Kenya a medal but he failed.

He instead faded to finish seventh in the men’s 100m final race. The race saw Lestsile Tebogo become the first African to win a medal in the 100m at the World Championships.

“Every day in training is a day of gaining and this year I’m going in with a different mindset since I don’t want to give you guys a lot of expectations.

“I want us to wait and see what will come our way I don’t want to predict anything since I just want to wait and see what will happen,” Omanyala said during a post-race interview at the Nyayo National Stadium.

He was just fresh from competing in the 200m heats where he clocked 20.4 to win his heat at the third Athletics Kenya meet.

The African champion disclosed that his body was responding well and raring to go and he is now ready to compete in the 200m after having feared for quite some time.

After his triumph, Omanyala also added that he is targeting the indoor tour and hopefully, he will be able to compete at the World Indoor Championships.

“It’s a fast time, I mean, the target was 20.50 and I’m grateful to have run 20.46. We want to go and build up on that and maybe so that the next time we want to go sub 20.00.

“I was thinking about the curve as I was coming to run here because the previous time I pulled my calf so I’m glad that I came here and I’m feeling comfortable now running the curve.

“I’m looking forward to seeing what the season has to offer for me. Now, I’m handling everything as it comes and now my focus has shifted to the 60m that will be starting next week and then ultimately it will end in Glasgow for the World Indoor Championships,” he said.
