FKF Vows Action After Journalist Assault at Dandora Stadium During Gor Mahia vs Mara Sugar
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has come out strongly to condemn the violence witnessed during the FKF Premier League clash between Gor Mahia and Mara Sugar that resulted in a journalist sustaining a gruesome injury.
The incident, witnessed on Sunday, resulted in Nation Media journalist Chris Omollo being hospitalised as Gor Mahia thumped Mara Sugar 4-0 at the Dandora Stadium.
What Happened?
Reports indicate that Omollo was struck on the head by security officers despite proper identification, lost consciousness, and had his spectacles broken.
The incident resulted in Omollo being immobilised and hospitalised.
The entrance at the Dandora Stadium was a debacle, as police also teargassed fans in a separate incident, resulting in a stampede.
FKF Statement
The Hussein Mohammed-led federation has come out strongly, condemning the violence witnessed on Sunday.
In a statement dated Tuesday, April 29, the Federation condemned the incident, noting full cooperation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
"The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is deeply saddened and profoundly regrets the assault on Daily Nation photojournalist, Mr. Chris Omollo, during the Gor Mahia versus Mara Sugar FKF Premier League match on Sunday, 27th April 2025, at Dandora Stadium, Nairobi. We strongly condemn the violence directed at Mr. Omollo, as well as any aggression towards fans and other journalists. Such actions are unacceptable and have no place in Kenyan football," the statement partly read.
"In response to this unacceptable incident, FKF is taking swift and decisive action. We are working closely with the National Police Service (NPS), Gor Mahia, Mara Sugar, and Dandora Stadium management to thoroughly investigate the circumstances of this assault and ensure accountability for those responsible," it continued.
"Additionally, we are reviewing and enhancing security protocols for journalists and spectators at Dandora Stadium and all football venues across Kenya to prevent future occurrences."
Violence in Kenyan Football
The incident comes amidst growing concern over violent conduct in Kenya's top-tier league.
Past incidents involving the FKF Premier League champions have seen such debacles at the Machakos Stadium, where former Brazilian coach Leonardo Neiva was jostled.
Another high-profile incident involved AFC Leopards and Mara Sugar during an FKF Cup clash at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu, which resulted in the former forfeiting the match.
With such growing incidents, the Federation is eyeing beefed-up security at the league’s match venues, including Dandora and Machakos.
