Former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has reportedly told friends he believes he is a candidate to take over at Manchester United should the club part ways with current boss Ruben Amorim.

Amorim has faced mounting pressure following a difficult start to the season at Old Trafford. Before a recent victory over Sunderland, he acknowledged that his time could be running out if results did not turn around. His admission came after a damaging loss to Brentford, though sources from co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS group initially suggested Amorim retained their backing for the remainder of the season.

Ratcliffe himself publicly supported the 40-year-old manager during the international break, stating he had no plans to make a change and even suggesting Amorim could be given a three-year window to prove his capabilities.

However, new reports from The Sun claim that Mancini, who has been out of management since leaving his post with the Saudi Arabia national team nearly a year ago, could enter the frame if United's leadership decides on a change.

The 60-year-old Italian has apparently indicated to his inner circle that he would be a viable option for the role. Mancini is said to have connections to Ratcliffe, with both men having residences in the south of France and having reportedly met at social events.

Amorim Has Received Backing from Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Mancini boasts an impressive managerial resume, highlighted by leading Italy to victory at Euro 2020 and famously guiding Manchester City to their first-ever Premier League title in 2012. Despite his credentials, his strong ties to United's cross-town rivals make a potential move to Old Trafford seem unlikely.

Other managers, such as Oliver Glasner and Gareth Southgate, have also been mentioned as potential successors to Amorim. Mancini remains a celebrated figure among City supporters, having won 113 of his 191 matches during his tenure.

Reinforcing his support for the current manager last week, Ratcliffe dismissed the idea of a knee-jerk reaction.

"It's not going to happen," Ratcliffe said regarding a potential sacking. "He has not had the best of seasons. Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That's where I would be. You can't run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions."

Despite the recent win against Sunderland, Amorim's side has lost three of their opening seven Premier League matches this season and suffered a shock elimination from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Grimsby.
