Group A Preview: Remo return to their fortress, Insurance, Enyimba eye away points
Having completed two rounds of league football matches, Group A of the 2023 NPFL will head into what would be their third game week.
For some teams, the new game week will be a chance to replicate what they've achieved so far and solidify their stance at the top half of the table.
For others, the aim would be to do better than they have, considering that an abridged season offers little or no opportunities for a revival.
As five matches spread across Ibadan, Ikenne, Jos and Maiduguri are about to create new talking points for Group A, what is to be expected?
Plateau United vs Enyimba
Having risen to become one of the top teams in Nigeria since their surprise title victory in the 2017 season, this fixture can be regarded as a heavyweight contest considering Plateau United are somewhat now in the same class as eight-time champions Enyimba.
The fixture, scheduled to take place at the New Jos Stadium on Sunday, will see Enyimba - who picked three points on the road in week 1 - aim for a second away win on a second attempt. Despite a draw in their previous match against Akwa United, they would fancy their chances against Plateau United who are yet to win a game, despite scoring four goals after two matches.
Prediction: A draw. Plateau United 1-1 Enyimba
Kwara United vs Bendel Insurance
For one team at the Lekan Salami Stadium on Sunday, it will be a bid to maintain their 100% record and remain in their position at the summit of Group A. For another, it will be a bid to find the back of the net for the first time this season.
Unlike Bendel Insurance who have, surprisingly, tasted two wins from a home and an away fixture, Kwara United are yet to get their season going. While they might bank on this fixture for their first goal and first three points, it is important to note that the last two league meetings between the Harmony Boys and the Group A leaders ended in goalless draws.
Prediction: Kwara United to win 1-0
Remo Stars vs Shooting Stars
Another team with a 100% record in Group A is Remo Stars who are living up to the expectations many expected of them. Two wins in two games starting with a confident 2-0 win in Ikenne the last time they played at home, see the Sky Blues sit in second in this group.
Awaiting them next Wednesday is Shooting Stars who, have failed to win in two matches, but have succeeded in scoring as many goals as Remo have in equal number of games.
Prediction: Remo Stars to win 2-1
