Heartbreak for Maresca as Chelsea star ruled out of Crystal Palace clash
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has admitted his side could be facing an early-season defensive crisis, with injuries threatening to leave the Blues short of options at centre-back ahead of their Premier League opener against Crystal Palace.
The Italian coach confirmed that Levi Colwill will miss the season, while Wesley Fofana and Benoît Badiashile are still not fully fit.
To make matters worse, Tosin Adarabioyo who was expected to deputise in Colwill’s role has now been ruled out of Saturday’s clash after sustaining a knock in training.
What Maresca said
According to The Times, Tosin’s setback is “not thought to be serious,” but the club has opted to keep him out as a precaution.
His absence leaves Maresca with limited cover in a role he considers vital.
“When we build, we build with Levi in the middle. It’s different to playing on the left side,” Maresca explained.
He continued, “Last year we played 64 games with Levi and Tosin. Now Levi is out. The only one that can do that job well is Tosin. The one in the middle recognises solutions, breaks lines, and in my way they are so, so important.”
With Tosin unavailable, Trevoh Chalobah cleared to play despite an ankle scare and he is expected to start.
Academy product Josh Acheampong and summer signing Aarón Anselmino are also in contention, while versatile right-back Reece James and teenager Jorrel Hato could be deployed in central defense if needed.
Fofana may return to the squad but is not considered fit enough to feature for a full 90 minutes.
