How Andre Onana saved Manchester United from complete humiliation against Brighton

The Red Devils’ performance this season in the Premier League continued to be a point of concern as they faced Brighton and Hove Albion at home. 

Manchester United failed to break their losing streak, succumbing to Brighton after a 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday. 

This defeat marked a significant setback for Erik Ten Hag, who was hoping to return to winning ways following what had been a turbulent two weeks.

One notable aspect of United’s struggle is the performance of their new goalkeeper, Andre Onana. 

In the last two matches, he has conceded a total of six goals, bringing his season tally to 10 goals, an average of two conceded per game.

This alarming statistic has led to criticism on social media, with many fans questioning the abilities of the former Inter Milan man.  

Despite the criticism and narratives that have led to him being mocked online, Onana played a pivotal role in preventing a more humiliating defeat against the Seagulls.

His exceptional saves spared United from further embarrassment at the hands of their rampant guests. 

This performance was particularly significant as the 27-year-old was accused of conceding every shot that came his way, which was not the case.

The Seagulls came into the match against United with an impressive reputation for their attacking prowess. 

They had attempted the most shots (83) in the league and had the record for the most shots on target (36) as well. 

However, their manager, Roberto De Zerbi, admitted that the early stages of the game were challenging as United deviated from their expected tactics.

"In the first 15-20 minutes we suffered a lot.," De Zerbi told the club website after the game. "Man United played in a different way to how we prepared but after that, we played a great game."

Despite the initial difficulties, Brighton managed to gain control of the game at Old Trafford. 

They continued to live up to that reputation, attempting 10 more shots, eight of which were on target, resulting in three goals.

"The game changed when we kept the ball better and helped us control the game," he added. "We also had three attackers who were very quick, and we kept our style."

Notable contributions came from former United forward, Danny Welbeck, Pascal Gross, who loves scoring against the Reds, and the youngster, Joao Pedro, who came off the bench.

While the Cameroonian has faced criticism from fans, it’s essential to acknowledge his crucial saves that kept the scoreline low and United in the match.

Many argue that he could have done better on some of the goals he conceded, drawing comparisons with departed club legend, David De Gea.

Nevertheless, the former Inter sweeper made five brilliant saves from eight attempts that were on target from Brighton. 

His performance, along with a consolation goal from Hannibal Mejbri’s exceptional strike, contributed to a somewhat respectable final scoreline for United at home.

Therefore, the clash between the Red Devils and Brighton showcased the challenges United have had which preceded Onana’s arrival.

Onana’s performance has stood out as a point of debate amidst another disappointment for United.
