Chelle, a Malian, was appointed as Nigeria's head coach in January 2025 and inherited a team struggling in its bid to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His tenure has been under intense scrutiny, particularly following a series of uninspiring performances, including the team's outing at the recent African Nations Championship.

What Chelle said

Despite the pressure, Chelle insists he is not fazed by the talk.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle says Nigeria will analyse CHAN 2024 and use it for the future.

He said, "I have heard a lot of stories about them wanting to sack me and replace me with someone else. I have heard about that," Chelle told journalist Osasu Obayiuwana.

He added, "I know, quite well, that I can be fired after one match. This is life in football. But if they decide to do that, they must be prepared to pay up the remainder of my contract."

The coach further clarified his commitment to the team, emphasising that his decision to take the job was not financially motivated.

"When I came to Nigeria, I didn’t come here because of money. I was earning more in my last job. I came to Nigeria because this is a very big team and I want to prove something, to achieve something. I came here for the challenge. Nothing has changed about that," said the former Mali coach.

Chelle also shed light on his relationship with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) leadership, revealing a lack of communication.

"I have not had very much contact with the NFF President and the General Secretary since I took charge of the team. We met at the very beginning, of course, and a few times afterwards. But I have been alone, largely, as I go on with doing my job," he stated.

In the eight games he has been in charge of the Super Eagles, Chelle has led them to four wins, two draws, and two defeats. While he did help Nigeria secure their first win of the World Cup qualifiers, the team remains in a precarious position.

The Super Eagles are currently fourth in Group C with seven points, trailing leaders South Africa by six points.

With four matches remaining in the group phase, the pressure is on Chelle to guide the Super Eagles to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
