‘I knew the game was finished’ - Aiyegbeni claims Super Eagles are over-reliant on Osimhen

Nigeria's hopes of reaching the tournament were dashed after a play-off loss to DR Congo, a match that showed the team's struggles without their striker. 

Osimhen, who had been instrumental in getting Nigeria to the play-offs with a hat-trick and a subsequent brace against Gabon, was forced off with a hamstring injury in the game at halftime. 

Following his substitution, the Super Eagles failed to register a single shot on target for the remainder of the match, including extra time, before ultimately losing in a penalty shootout.

Yakubu, who represented Nigeria at the 2010 World Cup, did not hold back in his assessment of the current squad's attacking options.

Speaking on the podcast, "The moment Osimhen went out against DR Congo, I knew the game was finished because in the second half, Congo were much better... We, on the other hand, were tactless. No game plan."

Following the introduction of Osimhen’s replacement in the game, Nigeria failed to create any moment or chance.

Arokodare’s presence was insufficient to cause any damage to the DR Congo’s defence, allowing the opponent sufficient access to attack.

Following the team's failure to secure a World Cup ticket, they will now put their focus on the African Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will need to show intent and make amends to appease the fans for their World Cup failure.
