Ifeoma Onumonu a Champion with Gotham FC: New York side defeats OL Reign to win NWSL Championship

Super Falcons of Nigeria star Ifeoma Onumonu is back in the social media trends.

The veteran forward has a reason to celebrate following her exploits in the United States of America.

New York/New Jersey Gotham FC defeated the OL Reign 2-1 to win the team's inaugural National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Championship. 

Ali Krieger, the captain of Gotham FC and a global soccer hero, retires as a champion having played every minute of the team's 300-minute playoff run. 

After forward Purce started a deft play, Gotham FC took the lead in the 25th minute. 

The winger cut through the defense of OL Reign, dodging three players to drive the ball low and into the bottom corner. 

Rose Lavelle's goal for OL Reign tied the score in the 29th minute.

During the first half's stoppage time, Gotham FC scored again. 

Esther of Spain, the 2023 World Cup champion, headed the ball into goal after Purce played it toward the top of the six-yard box. 

The defense of Gotham FC then prevented OL Reign from getting another opportunity until far into stoppage time.

Gotham FC's victory caps up the greatest season-to-season turnaround in NWSL history. 

Purce's outstanding performance earned her the title of NWSL Championship player as well. 

Ifeaoma Onumonu did not feature in the final but picked up a medal after featuring for the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the Olympic qualifier against Ethiopia.
