We did everything to win - Jose Peseiro reveals Super Eagles agony after Equatorial Guinea draw
Gutted Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro was left heartbroken after watching his side fail to beat Equatorial Guinea in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles kicked off the AFCON2023 with an uninspiring 1-1 draw against the National Thunder at the Stade Alassane Ouattara on Sunday.
Nigeria struggles against Equatorial Guinea
The Super Eagles were the favourite for the game and dominated, creating enough chances to take all three points against their less illustrious opponents.
However, Peseiro watched as his Eagles started the encounter from behind after Iban Salvador’s opener after 36 minutes of play.
Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen then combined to net the equaliser, saving Nigeria’s blushes against Equatorial Guinea in the Group A opener.
Peseiro rues missed chances
After the match, the Portuguese coach expressed sadness with the result, stating that his side did everything to win.
According to a Soccernet report, Peseiro believes that the Eagles created enough to have taken all three points.
“We did everything to win, we created many and clear opportunities, and we simply deserved to win,” Peseiro noted.
The Super Eagles manager also praised his players for their performance despite the difficult weather conditions in Cote d’Ivoire.
“Playing by 2 pm isn’t easy, so the temperature and humidity were not good,” he added. “But our players managed it very well. It wasn’t easy playing in these conditions.”

Peseiro and his Eagles will now switch attention to their second game against hosts and group leaders, Cote d’Ivoire.
The Elephants and Nigeria will go head-to-head, with the home side just another win away from the knockout stage while Nigeria must avoid defeat to keep their AFCON2023 hope alive.
