'Life Goes On' - Mohamed Salah Explains How the Liverpool Squad is Coping With the Absence of Diogo Jota
Mohamed Salah could not hide his emotion as he listened to the Liverpool fans' chants for Diogo Jota at the end of Liverpool's first Premier League match of the 2024/25 season last Friday.
After the 4-2 victory over Bournemouth, the Egyptian remained on the pitch in tears. On Tuesday, August 19, when asked about the absence of the late Portuguese international, the Reds' star explained how the English champions' squad has been coping with the loss of their teammate and friend.
"It was very sensitive for us, but I'm happy with how we've managed to handle the situation so far. We have to keep doing our job. Life goes on. We have to focus on our goal and, from time to time, let our feelings flow," Salah detailed in a video shared by BBC Sport.
How Diogo Jota and His Brother Lost Their Lives
The brothers were travelling in a Lamborghini Huracán on the A-52 motorway near the town of Cernadilla, in the province of Zamora, when the fatal crash occurred.
According to the Associated Press, the vehicle veered off the road and burst into flames. The initial investigation suggested that a tire blowout while overtaking another vehicle may have been a contributing factor, along with evidence pointing to 'significant speeding.'
Diogo Jota, who was driving at the time, and his brother were on their way to the port city of Santander to catch a ferry to England for Liverpool's pre-season training, as Jota was reportedly advised not to fly due to a recent lung surgery.
Tributes were held at matches, with fans and players observing moments of silence and displaying banners in their honour.
