Lionel Messi: PSG lose over 1 Million Instagram followers after Argentine maestro plays last game
Lionel Messi, the captain of Argentina to win the 2022 World Cup, played his farewell Ligue 1 game in the colors of Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday night against Clermont Foot.
The 35-year-old Messi will leave Paris after two seasons with the French champions, and the revelation has negatively impacted PSG's social media following.
Messi left his childhood club Barcelona in 2021 to join PSG, where he has since won two French leagues and the French Champions Trophy.
In 72 games with PSG in all competitions, Messi registered 32 goals and 35 assists.
PSG loses followers as Messi leaves
After Argentina's World Cup victory against France in Qatar, Messi has been the target of ongoing abuse from the home crowd.
The record seven-time Ballon d'Or winner wearing the new Jay-Jay Okocha inspired home jersey was booed by the PSG supporters at the team announcement, which came before their 2-3 loss to Clermont.
PSG lost almost 600,000 Instagram followers as a result of his final match at the Parc des Princes on Saturday against Clermont Foot.
Since then, a total of 1.4 million followers have unfollowed the PSG Instagram account whiile monitoring.
Messi received a contract extension from PSG, but the Argentinean chose to leave the team in the face of rising interest from elite teams across the world.
The rival Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, which plays against Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr, has made the Argentine genius a rich offer.
But David Beckham, a former Manchester United player, owns the Major League Soccer team Inter Miami, and they have expressed interest in Leo Messi.
Inter Miami is reportedly one of Messi's top suitors, and the MLS team has the option of sending the Argentine on loan to Barcelona, the team of Messi's youth, who are now having financial difficulties.
