Liverpool's noble gesture: Club to pay Diogo Jota's salary until contract end

Shortly after midnight on Thursday, Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, were in Zamora, Spain, driving towards Santander to catch a ferry to England.

Tragically, they never reached their destination. Around 12:35 a.m. local time, a blown tire caused their car to crash and burst into flames. Both Diogo and Andre, a player in the Portuguese second division, lost their lives.

Liverpool announced their intention to commemorate Jota, likely with a mural at Anfield depicting his final goal for the club, as reported by Sportal.

According to reports, the English club will continue paying Jota's salary to support his family: his wife, Rute, whom he recently married, and their three children.

Jota's contract ran until June 30, 2027, with an annual salary of approximately $7 million, plus performance bonuses.

During his five years with Liverpool, the former Portuguese international scored 65 goals in 182 appearances.
