The 32-year-old spent half of a season-long loan at Villa from Tottenham. The Villans are now said to have set their sights on the England international as they look to strengthen the right-back position.

Football Insider reports that Aston Villa are interested in bringing in Walker in the summer, with manager Unai Emery said to have marked the right-back spot as a problem position.

The Spanish tactician is said to want a proven player, one seasoned in the role, and Walker is the right fit they are reportedly in the market for.

The reports come after the Manchester City manager publicly cast doubt over the defender's continuation at the club, following his reduced game time in recent matches.

Aston Villa are expected to back Emery in the summer, following the relative success they have enjoyed since he resumed the role. Walker's contract expires at the end of next season and he could be available for relatively cheap in the summer transfer window.

City and Villa also have a recent relationship, with the Manchester side spending their club record fee on Jack Grealish, who was the talisman of the Birmingham club.

More on Walker’s Man City future

England international John Stones has been preferred to Walker as the person to take on the role of stepping into midfield to partner Rodri when City are in possession.
