Ruben Amorim's side struggled to create chances from open play and leveled the score through a Robin Gosens own goal. The hosts, however, looked dangerous from set pieces and were flawless in the shootout.

New signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha started, interestingly deployed on either wing, while Mason Mount played as a central striker. Rasmus Hojlund, a target for AC Milan, remained on the bench throughout. Casemiro partnered Bruno Fernandes in midfield.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea started for Fiorentina and received a warm welcome from the Old Trafford faithful. Moise Kean and Edin Dzeko led the line for La Viola.

The visitors opened the scoring in the seventh minute. A corner kick evaded several players before finding Simon Sohm, who calmly slotted the ball into the corner.

Manchester United struggled to find their rhythm but equalised in the 25th minute, also from a corner.

Bruno Fernandes's delivery to the far post was turned into his own net by Robin Gosens under pressure from Ivorian defender Eric Bailly and Casemiro. Fiorentina appealed for a foul, which might have been given with VAR, but the goal stood.

In the 30th minute, Manchester United nearly took the lead, but De Gea produced a brilliant save to deny Bailly's close-range header.

Early in the second half, Simon Sohm nearly grabbed his second, but his shot struck the woodwork.

Matheus Cunha unleashed a powerful long-range effort in the 60th minute that went wide. Shortly after, a bizarre collision saw Alvaro Fernandez push Casemiro just as the Brazilian was heading the ball, disrupting his balance and sending the effort over the bar.

Harry Maguire's thunderous strike in the 67th minute was parried away by De Gea.

Bryan Mbeumo had a golden opportunity to win it for United in the 81st minute. He received an excellent pass from Bruno Fernandes inside the box, but his shot from close range was blocked by a pair of Fiorentina defenders.

Moise Kean could have snatched a late victory for Fiorentina in the 90th minute, capitalizing on a poor backpass from Diogo Dalot. Matthijs de Ligt attempted to close him down, but Kean's miscued shot went wide of the far post.

With the match ending in a draw, the game went to penalties. De Gea had been substituted by Tommaso Martinelli.

Moise Kean converted Fiorentina's first penalty, and Bruno Fernandes coolly leveled for United. Giacomo Bonaventura fired his spot-kick under the bar to make it 2-1, but Matheus Cunha made it 2-2.

Youssef Maleh and Dalot then traded successful penalties. Christian Kouamé’s penalty just squeaked past Altay Bayındır, despite the keeper getting a hand to it. Hannibal Mejbri levelled with a Panenka.
