Messi and Inter Miami’s failure in MLS Cup spells end of Tata Martino as Argentine manager resigns

Lionel Messi’s first full season with Inter Miami concluded on a disappointing note, as the team fell short of the MLS Cup. 

This setback has led to the resignation of head coach Tata Martino, who has stepped down citing personal reasons. 

Tata Martino took over the reins at Inter Miami in June 2023, following Phil Neville’s exit and his arrival coincided with Messi’s groundbreaking move to Major League Soccer, along with the arrivals of Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and later Luis Suarez. 

Despite inheriting a team that was last in the Eastern Conference, Martino steered Inter Miami to a remarkable turnaround, culminating in their historic Leagues Cup triumph—the club’s first-ever silverware. 

However, Inter Miami’s ambitions for MLS Cup glory in 2024 ended prematurely, with the team crashing out to Atlanta United despite being heavy favourites. 

While they achieved a league-record 74 points and secured the Eastern Conference title, the inability to claim the ultimate prize overshadowed their regular-season success. 

Martino’s departure leaves David Beckham and Inter Miami with the challenge of finding a new coach to lead the team. 

With Messi, Busquets, and Alba under contract, and rumours of Neymar potentially joining, Inter Miami remains a star-studded squad poised for a crucial season ahead.  

Despite controversy surrounding their inclusion, their participation in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup starting on June 15 will offer a platform to redeem their reputation on the global stage. 

As Inter Miami enters this new chapter, expectations remain sky-high. The club’s next managerial appointment will be pivotal in shaping the future of a team determined to capitalise on its star power and rectify the disappointments of this past season.
