‘No excuses now!’ — Mikel Obi tells namesake Arteta Arsenal must win Premier League or Champions League title
Super Eagles legend John Mikel Obi has issued a strong challenge to Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, insisting the Gunners have no excuses this season and must win either the Premier League or the Champions League.
With Arsenal enjoying renewed optimism and significant financial backing, Mikel pointed out that the club now boasts one of the strongest squads in the Premier League, especially in terms of depth.
Recent signings like Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres exemplify the club’s commitment to strengthening every position.
Speaking on his podcast, Mikel said, “I have to say, and to all Arsenal fans, this is the time. The club, the owners, and the hierarchy have massively backed the team. Two players in every position - massively backed him [Arteta]. They have the strongest squad in the Premier League alongside Liverpool, especially in terms of depth.”
He emphasised that with such resources, Arteta has no excuse for falling short this season, especially after back-to-back-to-back second place finishes.
“There is no excuse now for Mikel. He knows that, and I'm happy he's come out and said it. He has to win the Premier League or the Champions League. Winning the FA Cup or League Cup won’t cut it.”
Mikel added that, should Arteta fail to claim one of the two top trophies, he must be honest about his role at the Emirates.
“If he doesn’t win either, put your hands up and say, ‘I’ve tried. I’ve done my best. I built a really good team.' Credit to him—he’s built a really solid Arsenal squad. But sometimes, it requires the man who knows how to win trophies. If he’s not that guy, he should admit it.”
