'Mommy Rocket' Fraser-Pryce wins historic Laureus Sportswoman of the Year

A deserving award for a track legend, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has been declared winner of year 2023 Laureus Sportswoman of the Year Award.

The Jamaican had an iconic 2022 season, becoming a five-time 100m World Champion - the oldest sprinter to win a world title in an individual running event.

Her victory came almost fourteen years after her first global 100m title, making her the oldest-ever World Champion in any individual track event. She added 200m and 4x100m Silver medals, ending with three medals at the World Championships in Oregon.

Fraser-Pryce surpassed the 10.70s mark in the 100m seven times throughout last year, one of those performances – her 10.67s in Oregon.

She capped her season at the Diamond League final in Zurich, winning her fourth 100m Diamond Trophy in a Meeting Record (MR) of 10.65s.

In her 15th season of international racing, the 35-year-old sprint star continued to blaze a trail, proving the maxim that ‘wine gets better with age’, and is now hailed as the world’s greatest ever women’s sprinter.

After being nominated six times in the past, Fraser-Pryce finally has the icing on the cake of the most prestigious sporting award in the world.

Fraser-Pryce won ahead of fellow track star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Iga Swiatek (world No.1 female tennis player), Alexia Putellas (best women's football player), Katie Ledecky (Swimming), and Mikaela Shiffrin (Alpine Skiing).
