Roma needed a last-minute moment of inspiration from Italian winger Stephan El Shaarawy to overcome 10-man Monza, despite playing the larger share of the match with a one-man advantage.

Monza were reduced to 10 men after Danilo D’Ambrosio received his marching orders in the first half and held on until the final moments of the game before getting their hearts broken.

In the aftermath of the late goal, Roma manager Jose Mourinho was also sent off.

How it happened

Roma came into the game against Minnows Monza on the back of three consecutive wins after enduring a difficult start to the season and hoped to continue their recent recovery with yet another comfortable win.

However, the game proved to be incredibly tedious for the hosts, despite Monza losing a man just before the end of the first period.

D'Ambrosio, who had already been booked for a foul earlier in the match, received a second yellow card and a subsequent red card after a gruesome foul on Roma’s Andrea Belloti to ensure Monza would get a difficult second period.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the away side still held their own in the Stadio Olimpico until the 90th minute of the game, when El Shaarawy scored a brilliant volley following some penalty box pinball to send the stadium into raptures.

In the aftermath of the goal celebrations, Roma manager Mourinho was given a straight red card after making a weeping gesture towards the Monza bench in the heat of the moment.

The Gialorossi boss, who is no stranger to controversy, could now be set for a lengthy suspension after already missing out on the opening three games of the current Serie A season due to a ban for his actions last season.
