After taking over mid-season last year and guiding the Red Devils to one of their worst campaigns ever, the Portuguese coach has stumbled again at the start of this season, accumulating just four points from the first four matchdays.

The Red Devils also fell to a heavy defeat in their derby clash, as Manchester City ran out 3-0 winners over city rivals at the Etihad.

"Has the disappointment been over the last year or the last 12 years?" he said, as reported by Abola.

"Manchester United hasn't been good in recent years. I think Man Utd have had some of the best coaches in the world for a long time.

"When José Mourinho, Louis Van Gaal, Solskjaer, David Moyes… none of them can achieve great success, it shows that the blame isn't entirely on the coach," he added.

The former striker argues that several things need to change at the club, but he calls for patience and insists the problem isn't with the manager.

"There's a lot that United needs to change and improve. And the club also needs to be patient and stick with a manager. I hope the good times return.

"The club will have to fight hard because it's not something that will happen quickly. People need to understand that getting back to the top will be a slow process," he asserted.
