The 22-year-old, who has been building a reputation as a penalty-stopping specialist, denied Andre Silva from the spot, marking his fourth consecutive penalty save in the Bundesliga.
Atubolu’s penalty heroics continue
Freiburg’s dominant display saw them climb into the Bundesliga’s final Champions League spot, but the defining moment came in the 39th minute when Atubolu kept Bremen from getting back into the game.
The Germany U21 international, often under scrutiny from his own fans, has now saved four penalties in the last year, including stops against Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz and Union Berlin duo Kevin Volland and Josip Juranovic.
Speaking to DAZN after the match, Atubolu expressed his delight, stating, “I was very happy to save a penalty here at home in front of the fans.
“It is got to do with the fact that I spend a lot of time practising penalties and am prepared. I have my methods, but I am not going to give them away.”
Could Nigeria secure Atubolu for the Super Eagles?
Born in Germany to Nigerian parents of Igbo descent, Atubolu has represented Germany at U17, U19, and U21 levels.
However, with Nigeria constantly on the look out for a goalkeeper, there is growing hope that he could switch allegiance to the Super Eagles.
With his shot-stopping abilities and composure under pressure, Atubolu is quickly emerging as a top talent and a top target for the Super Eagles.
If Nigeria can convince him to don the green and white, he could become the long-term solution to their goalkeeping concerns.
