Super Eagles earn late win against Libya: How it happened
Eguavoen's men were aggressive from the start, with Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface leading the line in Victor Osimhen's absence.
The hosts nearly broke the deadlock through Fulham's Alex Iwobi but his near post strike was saved by Libya keeper Murad Al Wuheeshi.
The pressure continued and Eguavoen's men failed to put away yet another fine opportunity as Frank Onyeka struck the ball from outside the box, forcing a nice save but Troost-Ekong was unable to fire home the rebound.
The Libyan defenders remained solid throughout a first-half that was dominated by Nigeria.
The second half continued in the same manner with Eguavoen's me trying hard to force the issue.
Samuel Chukwueze came on for Onyeka at half-time and failed to bury an excellent chance in the 70th minute as the Libyan goalkeeper continued his man-of-the-match display.
Boniface, who was tasked with replacing Osimhen, once again failed to deliver for the Super Eagles and was subbed off for Taiwo Awoniyi with 20 minutes remaining.
With 10 minutes left on the clock, Ballon d'Or nominee Ademola Lookman had the ball in the net with a fine finish but the strike was ruled out for offside.
