Nigeria's Lookman fires AFCON warning with winning goal for Atalanta against Lecce
Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman has signed off for the year in style after leading Atalanta BC to a victory against Lecce in the Serie A.
Atalanta ended the year on a winning note, moving into the top six, following a narrow 1-0 victory against Lecce, who ended the year without away this season.
Lookman the hero
After the defeat against Bologna in the previous match, La Dea needed a quick return to winning ways in the final game of the year at home.
However, despite being the league's top-scoring side at home this season, Atalanta did not get going until the second half after Lecce held them to a goalless affair in the first.
A dominant display saw them in charge of affairs at Bergamo before Nigeria’s Lookman finally broke the deadlock just before the hour mark.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s men took the lead after top scorer, Lookman fired an excellent low effort to put them ahead.
The goal was the seventh of the season for the 26-year-old, who is expected to depart for the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.
Lookman’s goal turned out to be the winner in the end as Atalata held on for a sixth successive win at home.
Atalanta moved up to sixth on the table with 29 points from 18 matches while Lecce sit 13th.
