Lagos-based club side Sporting Lagos are through to the Super 8 Playoffs in the Nigeria National League, NNL, after a thrilling final game of the season.
Sporting thrashed their visitors Smart City 4-0 to seal an easy ticket to the Super 8 on the final day of the regular season on Wednesday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.
The Tech Boys left their best performance of the season for the last and delivered when it mattered most to move a step closer to securing a place in the NPFL.
Sporting ease past City
Both teams went into the all-important encounter condemned to get all three points.
Sporring needed the win to finish top of the table and seal a place in the Super 8 Playoffs while the visitors needed the points to preserve their NNL status.
However, cheered on by their happy fans, Lagos delivered a dominant display to complete the double against Smart City.
One of the stars of the season for the Tech Boys, Chisom Orji, opened the floodgate of goals when he unleashed another stunning effort to put Sporting 1-0 up at the break.
Rivio doubled their advantage just before the hour mark before Okon made the game safe with a third goal in the 76th minute.
With two minutes left to play, Clement added a fourth to wrap up proceedings and the win at the Onikan Arena.
What the win means
Following the victory, Sporting will join seven other clubs in the Super 8 Playoffs to determine who are promoted to the NPFL.
Only four teams will be promoted from the Super 8, with Sporting looking to be one of those clubs as they eye history.
Smart City, they will compete in the relegation playoffs to preserve their NNL status next season after ending the season at the bottom of the table.
