Akwa United pulled off a massive 2-1 upset win over previously unbeaten Plateau United at home on Sunday, boosting their hopes of avoiding relegation from the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL.

Pulse Sports Nigeria reports that fan favourite Sani Suleiman was the hero after he converted a dramatic late penalty in stoppage time to seal all three points for the Promise Keepers.

Surprise Lead for Akwa United

Gerome Heutchou had given the relegation-threatened Akwa United a shock 1-0 lead after just 10 minutes.

But Anthony Sunday equalised for Plateau United in the 77th minute to seemingly rescue a point for the hosts.

Suleiman Sani continues his fine form for Akwa United in the NPFL.

That set the stage for Suleiman's heroics deep into stoppage time. The talented youngster coolly slotted home from the penalty spot to stun Plateau United 2-1.

It was Suleiman's fourth goal in his last five NPFL matches as he continues a rich vein of form that could see the Akwa Ibom team survive the drop.

The crucial victory lifts Akwa United to 16th in the NPFL table as they continue their battle against relegation in what has been a difficult season for the Promise Keepers.

As for Plateau United, it was their first home league defeat of the season that has now seen them drop out of the top four to fifth on the table.
