NPFL Super 6: Champions Rivers United off to a winning start, Enyimba, Remo Stars deliver thriller

Rivers United’s quest to retain their NPFL title received a huge boost on the opening day of the NPFL Super 6.

The Pride of Rivers were the only side to register a win on the first day of the NPFL Super 6 playoffs.

A total of five goals were scored in three matches with the opening game of the playoffs between Enyimba and Remo Stars the most entertaining.

The holders started the competition with a narrow 1-0 win over surprise package Sunshine Stars.

It was the second game of the day with Ebube Duru the hero for the defending champions.

The Owena Whales proved a difficult nut to crack and pused the champions all the way before they finally succumbed to a late penalty.

Setpiece specialist, Duru, stepped up to the plate to convert calmly to give United a narrow winning start to the competition.

Enyimba denied by Remo Stars

In the first game of the day, Remo Stars produced an impressive comeback to share the spoils with the People’s Elephant.

Enyimba and Remo Stars played a 2-2 draw to get the tournament off to a flyer.

The encounter was the Chukwuemeka, the league’s top scorer and Junior Lokosa show as both forwards were involved in all the goals.

Emeka scored one and assisted the second for the Elephant while Lokosa was a super-sub after coming off the bench to inspire the Sky Blues’ comeback with a goal and assist, too.

Bendel Insurance held by Lobi

In the last game of the day, Bendel Insurance and Lobi Stars also shared the spoils following a goalless affair.

Insurance dominated the encounter and created the most chances but did not make it count as they were forced to a draw by a stubborn Lobi Stars.
