“No official should be subject to any form of abuse, let alone the abhorrent attacks aimed at Michael and his family over the past 24 hours.

“The police are aware, and a number of investigations have commenced. We are supporting Michael, and all those affected, and are determined to tackle this unacceptable behaviour.

“Sadly, this is not the first time a match official has been forced to deal with threats in recent times. We will continue to support all investigations.”

Controversial red card decision

Lewis-Skelly’s sending-off occurred after the teenager’s challenge on Doherty was deemed a straight red card by Oliver. The tackle saw Lewis-Skelly make contact with Doherty’s ankle in a raking motion, prompting the referee’s decision.

The call left Arsenal players and manager Mikel Arteta visibly frustrated. Despite their protests, VAR upheld Oliver’s decision, determining that there was no clear and obvious error to warrant an on-field review.

The match itself was eventful, with Wolves’ Joao Gomes also receiving a red card shortly after Lewis-Skelly’s dismissal. Arsenal secured all three points thanks to a second-half goal from Riccardo Calafiori.
