Premier League: Meet the Nigerians set to replace relegated Iheanacho, Ndidi, and 2 others
Leicester City duo Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi have joined Southampton’s Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu in the Championship next season.
Iheanacho and Ndidi’s status was confirmed on the final day of the season in the Premier League after their club Leicester failed in their bid to avoid the drop.
The Foxes defeated West Ham United 2-1 in their final game of the season but it was a bit too late to save them from relegation after Alex Iwobi and Everton got their business done at Goodison Park.
With Leicester and Southampton relegated, have the Nigeria Super Eagles taken a hit in terms of representatives left in the Premier League with four players off?
Well, here are three Nigerian players set to replace the departing quartet next season in the league.
3 Nigerians promoted to the Premier League
On Saturday evening, Championship side Luton Town became the 51st club to play in the Premier League after their promotion.
Luton defeated Coventry 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time to seal a place in the PL for the first time in 31 years.
Three Nigerians were involved in that game for the Hatters, Elijah Adebayo, Gabriel Osho and Fred Onyedinma.
Of the three, giant Adebayo and Osho started the game before they were subbed off in the 106th and 112th minutes respectively while Onyedinma was a second half substitute.
Adebayo, who is the Hatters’ striker, played a prominent role in the final Championship playoff at Wembley as he assisted the opening goal scored by his team Jordan Clark.
Osho was also solid at the back while Onyedinma came on to also contribute his quota to the team’s historic success.
With the quartet of Iheanacho, Ndidi, Aribo and Onuachu, who stands also at 6ft 4in, Nigerians can look forward to the Hatters trio flying the Nigerian flag next season in the Premier League.
