Red Devils get another unwanted record under Amorim after Manchester derby defeat
Excluding teams relegated from the Premier League to the Championship last season (Leicester, Ipswich Town, and Southampton) and those promoted (Leeds, Burnley, and Sunderland) — who, consequently, have played fewer matches than the other 17 teams competing in the Premier League in 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 — Manchester United is the team that has accumulated the fewest points since Rúben Amorim took charge of the Red Devils.
The former Sporting manager debuted in the 12th round of the Premier League, in a 1-1 draw away to Ipswich Town. The subsequent 26 rounds of that season (2024/2025) saw Manchester United collect a mere 27 points. This averages out to just over one point per game — a tally far below the expectations for a club of the Red Devils' stature. Among the teams that remained in the top flight, only Tottenham fared worse during that period, with 22 points.
The 2025/2026 season has, so far, shown no clear signs of improvement. In four matches played, Manchester United has garnered only four points (1W 1D 2L), maintaining virtually the same points-per-game average as the previous season. This marks United's worst start to a season since 1992-93, when they also managed four points from their opening four fixtures under Alex Ferguson.
Offensively and defensively, the indicators are equally disheartening: the team has scored just four goals while conceding seven.
It's worth recalling that in the 27 league matches Amorim managed in 2024/2025, United scored 32 goals and conceded 42, figures that already highlighted struggles in both attack and defense. The comparison with the start of the new season reveals a worrying trend: even worse averages in terms of goals scored and conceded.
With significant summer investment and ambitions to return to the top echelons, pressure is mounting on Rúben Amorim. Fans and critics alike are demanding rapid improvements, or the Portuguese manager risks seeing his project compromised prematurely.
Regarding goal difference, Manchester United stands at -13. Only Wolverhampton has a worse record at -17, but they have five more points.
