Representing Senegal over France feels like following God's plan- Ex- Chelsea Star
Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly has revealed that it was God's plan for him to play for Senegal ahead of France.
Born in France to Senegalese parents, Koulibaly embodies a beautiful blend of cultures. He acknowledges his French upbringing and takes pride in it.
However, his decision to represent Senegal on the international stage reflects a deeper connection.
"Maybe, but I believe in fate. I always say that I am the fruit of two cultures - the French and the Senegalese. I am very proud to be French. But for me, representing Senegal has been God’s plan.
"There has been something inside of me since 2002, pulling me toward that fate. I remember back when Aliou took over the team in 2015, he called me and said, Kouli, we’re going into a new cycle, and we need you. You must come with us.
"He took a chance on a 24-year-old who was still sitting on the bench for Napoli. He believed in me. So I had to believe in Senegal, " he told Players Tribune
Playing for Senegal is about blood, history - Koulibaly
Koulibaly describes his choice for Senegal as a matter of destiny, adding that it is an act of faith ignited a fire within him, a chance to represent his heritage and fulfill a sense of belonging.
He said, "Sometimes people ask me why I chose to play for Senegal instead of France. When I called my parents to tell them my decision, it was the only time in my life that I had seen them excited about football."
"Me representing my country is not just about a football match. It is about my blood, and my history, and the dreams of my parents. I’ll never forget the day that I became captain."
