Wayne Rooney has been told that his managerial breakthrough is inevitable, with the Manchester United legend being linked with the vacant managerial position at Huddersfield Town.

Despite underwhelming spells at Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle, former EFL star Joe Jacobson believes Rooney possesses the drive to succeed in the dugout and has tipped him for a future role with the Terriers.

Huddersfield Town are currently searching for a permanent manager following the departure of Michael Duff.

The League One club, who were surprisingly in playoff contention for a significant portion of the 2024-25 season before a dramatic slump in form, could offer Rooney an opportunity to rebuild his managerial reputation while remaining geographically close to his family in Cheshire.

Jacobson, speaking to Football League World, acknowledged Huddersfield's current struggles but suggested that Rooney's determination could eventually lead to success.

He said, "Huddersfield are a huge club, but for some reason, I think they got rid of Michael Duff far too soon.

"Wayne Rooney has football in his blood and he's desperate to succeed somewhere as a manager, but he's not quite been able to do that just yet. I do think at some point he will succeed," Jacobson stated.

When questioned about whether Huddersfield would be the right fit for Rooney, Jacobson remained uncertain but reiterated his belief in the former England captain's potential.

He added, "Is Huddersfield the right fit? I'm not sure, you'd have to speak to Wayne Rooney, but I do believe that at some point, he will be successful as a manager."

Huddersfield's disappointing end to the season, marked by a run of five consecutive defeats and seven losses in their last eight matches, means they will remain in League One for the 2025-26 campaign.
