Denis Onyango will forever remember the 30th of October 2021 as the day he became an instrumental figure in Mamelodi Sundowns clinching their first MTN 8 title in 16 years.

Against Cape Town City, in the heart of Moses Mabhida Stadium, Onyango displayed goalkeeping brilliance, stopping five penalties.

The Brazilians triumphed with a 3-1 score in the post-match penalty shootout, marking their first cup win since 2007.

Mokwena acknowledges the imminent challenge as his team prepares to return to the same ground for the same competition's final against reigning champions Orlando Pirates.

"It's going to be a daunting task, especially facing the defending champions. However, we're prepared to give it our all," Rulani commented.

Yet, it's Onyango's vast experience in finals with Masandawana that makes him a potential game-changer.

With only one appearance this season, if chosen by Mokwena, Onyango could be pivotal against the Pirates.

The towering former captain of the Uganda Cranes has consistently showcased his cup final prowess with the Brazilians.

Notably, during the 2015 Telekom Cup final, he shone by thwarting two penalty attempts in regular play, helping Pitso Mosimane's team secure a 3-1 victory against arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

Again, in the 2019/20 Nedbank Cup final, his decisive saves contributed to a narrow 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic.

Despite Ronwen Williams, who joined from Supersport United last season, taking over the first-choice goalkeeper spot, pushing Onyango to a secondary role, the upcoming final could be Onyango's chance to shine.

If Mokwena places his trust in the Ugandan goalie this Saturday, he might just be the key to Sundowns capturing their third MTN 8 title.
